Can You Get Pregnant On Your Period?
Most women, at some point or another, want to find an answer to the question “can you get pregnant on your period?†The answer is yes, you can, but it’s unlikely it will happen.
In case you want to have a baby, there’s no point in having sex during your period only in the hope that you’ll get pregnant, because it’s almost impossible. But if you definitely don’t want to get pregnant, and you want to make sure that there are no risks for this to happen, than it’s better to avoid unprotected sex all the time, even on your period. Remember, you can get pregnant during your period.
To take the question a little further (can you get pregnant on your period?) you must understand how your body works and what the process of getting pregnant is. Here’s a brief description of how things work. Ovulation is the keyword. Ovulation is the release of a mature egg from the ovarian follicle. It is expelled into the pelvic cavity and swept into the Fallopian tube. The egg is capable of being fertilized for about 24 hours after release. On the other hand, spermatozoids live up to 5-7 days within your fallopian tubes. Therefore, there are a maximum of 8 days of the month when having unprotected sex may result in pregnancy. But the problem is you cannot determine for sure which are those days and, besides, all sorts of dysfunctions may appear in your body. Regularly, ovulation takes place 2 weeks after the period.
However, if you use the calendar method, it is obvious that there are fewer chances to get pregnant on your period than at any other time. You have two ovaries, and they arbitrarily produce the ova. However, on a cycle, only one of the two ovaries works. And here’s how you can get pregnant on your period: one of the ovaries works as it should: it produces the ova, the ova is not fertilized and in approximately two weeks you get your period. But meanwhile, the other ovary may decide to stop resting and get back to work sooner than it should. Then you will have your period, but maybe also have an ovulation only 3-4 days after the period gets over. As the life of the spermatozoids is of about 5-7 days long, this dysfunction plus unprotected sex during the period may result in a pregnancy. It is also possible not to have ovulation at all between two periods, but still get the second bleeding. It is obvious that in this case the ovaries might get back to work at any time; they won’t necessarily do it in two weeks after bleeding.
When asking “can you get pregnant on your period?†you must also consider the fact that you can never be absolutely certain that you’re experiencing a period. Because of increasing stress levels, many women experience some vaginal bleeding that can be easily mistaken for a period. Besides this, there is no certainty about how long the sperms survive.
However, if your period is a regular one, there is very little chance to get pregnant. If it is not regular, the chances increase, but the probability is still a small one. Choosing whether to have unsafe sex during the period or not is a matter of how much risk you are willing to take.
You must be aware of the risk you’re taking. Don’t assume you won’t get pregnant only because all your friends have unprotected sex on their period and none of them got pregnant. You may be more fertile than they are, or you might be unlucky and have a dysfunction right during period when you have unprotected sex.
So…can you get pregnant during your period? Yes. Are you willing to take this risk? It’s up to you! My personal experience, I wouldn’t advise anyone to do it. I did not get pregnant, but I had the worst days of my life when I realized that I mistook a simple vaginal bleeding for my period. Believe me, the symptoms were just the same! Of course, there is no pregnancy test (at this stage) that can give you a certainty only a few days after sexual intercourse either.
